Bur Dubai transport upgrades force major decisions on bridge, metro projects

The Roads and Transport Authority completed all phases of the Al Shindagha Corridor Development Project in Bur Dubai, cutting travel times from 80 minutes to 12 minutes and raising capacity from 6,400 to 24,000 vehicles per hour along the route from Al Garhoud Bridge to Port Rashid via the Infinity Bridge.

Completed Corridor and Next Bridge Link

This upgrade restores flow through the historic district and directly supports the approved 1,425-metre bridge that will connect Bur Dubai to Dubai Islands. The AED 786 million project, awarded to Dubai Holding, will provide four lanes in each direction. Officials now face decisions on integration with existing roads and on managing increased vehicle volumes once the bridge opens.

Metro Blue Line Timeline and Integration Choices

Main tunnelling for the Dubai Metro Blue Line began in May 2026. The 30 km line with 14 stations is scheduled for completion by the end of 2029. Planners must decide how the new line will link with the existing Green Line, which runs 22 km with 16 stations from Etisalat to Creek and operates trains every two minutes during peak hours of 7-9 AM and 5-8 PM.

Current Public Transport Options

Residents and visitors continue to rely on traditional abras that cross Dubai Creek between Bur Dubai and Deira in under 10 minutes for AED 1 per passenger, departing when full with around 20 people. Bus Route 81 links Bur Dubai directly to Deira, while Route 11 runs from Al Ghubaiba to Jebel Ali between 4 AM and 1 AM with services every 10-15 minutes on major routes. Traffic congestion remains heaviest during weekday rush hours of 7-9 AM and 5-7 PM, and on Friday evenings near shopping areas.

The Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan identifies upgrades to Bur Dubai and Deira as core objectives, requiring coordinated decisions on how the new bridge, Blue Line stations and existing abra and bus services will work together once construction finishes.
