Bur Dubai Transport Network Expands With Metro, Bus, Abra Services
The area relies on established metro, bus and abra services while major road projects aim to improve flow during peak periods.
How we reported this
Bur Dubai is directly served by the Dubai Metro's Green Line, which connects historic areas like Dubai Creek and souks with 16 stations including BurJuman and Union. Traditional abras provide a 1 AED crossing between Bur Dubai and Deira across Dubai Creek, taking less than 10 minutes and departing when full with around 20 passengers.
Local Transport Options in Use
Bus Route 81 and Route 88 connect Bur Dubai to Deira and Dubai Mall. These routes run from 4 AM to 1 AM with service every 10 to 15 minutes on major routes. All public transport in Bur Dubai uses the Nol card system, with single trips costing AED 3 to 7.50 depending on zones traveled. Traffic congestion peaks during weekday rush hours from 7 to 9 AM and 5 to 7 PM, with Friday afternoons especially affected near shopping malls and attractions.
Road and Metro Upgrades Underway
The Roads and Transport Authority completed all phases of the Al Shindagha Corridor Development Project in Bur Dubai, reducing travel time from 80 minutes to 12 minutes and increasing capacity to 24,000 vehicles per hour. A new 1,425-meter bridge costing AED 786 million is under construction to connect Bur Dubai to Dubai Islands with four lanes in each direction. Main tunnelling on the Dubai Metro Blue Line began in May 2026 on the 30 km line with 14 stations.
Further Projects in Planning
The Tasreef project approved in June at AED 30 billion will expand Dubai's rainwater drainage capacity by 700 percent across the emirate, covering areas including Bur Dubai. The Al Khail Road upgrade at AED 700 million includes five new bridges and road expansion works led by the RTA. These steps address local conditions in a manner seen in other dense urban centres facing similar peak-hour demands.
Residents can check current service times and Nol card balances through official RTA channels for daily travel planning.
