Bur Dubai Residents to Benefit from Dhs18 Billion Executive Council Package

Bur Dubai residents are set to see major improvements to transport, housing and cultural amenities under a Dhs18 billion package of projects and strategies approved by the Dubai Executive Council on July 1, 2026. The sweeping initiative, announced by the council chaired by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, includes new roads, heritage restoration, and community centres that directly affect the everyday lives of those living and working in the district.

Faster Commutes and Better Connections

The centrepiece for Bur Dubai commuters is the completion of the Al Shindagha Corridor Development Project, which has slashed travel time from 80 minutes to just 12 minutes and boosted traffic capacity from 6,400 to 24,000 vehicles per hour. The corridor now provides uninterrupted flow from Al Garhoud Bridge to the Waterfront Market, a critical artery for residents travelling between Bur Dubai and other parts of the city. A new Dhs786 million, 1,425-metre bridge linking Dubai Islands to Bur Dubai, awarded to Dubai Holding in 2026, will add another connection, easing congestion for those heading to and from the island developments. Additionally, a 1km bridge connecting Sheikh Zayed Road to Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Street, opened in June 2026, has cut journey times from six minutes to one minute for thousands of daily users. The council also approved the First Al Khail Street Development Plan, adding a 15-kilometre elevated corridor parallel to Sheikh Zayed Road, with construction starting in Q3 2027. This project is projected to cut peak-hour travel times on Sheikh Zayed Road by 51% once complete.

Heritage and Community Investments

Beyond roads, the council approved a three-year plan led by the Dubai Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM), in partnership with Dubai Municipality and Dubai Culture, to restore and revamp the historic districts of Bur Dubai, Al Shindagha, Deira and Al Fahidi. The aim is to create a leading culture and heritage centre, preserving the area's traditional character while opening it up for residents and visitors alike. On the practical side, five new community neighbourhood councils are being built to give local voices a formal platform. Dubai Municipality awarded contracts for councils in Nad Al Sheba II, Al Awir II, Al Barsha South I, Al Warqa II and Hatta, with completion expected between the fourth quarter of 2025 and the second quarter of 2026. These councils are intended to provide residents with direct input into local planning and services, including housing and digitalization, as part of the 2026 Agenda. The council also approved a Dh112 million project to restore 2.3 kilometres of historic creek pier walls on the Bur Dubai side, preventing flooding and upgrading damaged dock sections in two phases, with the second phase covering the Bur Dubai stretch.

Economic and Housing Support

The Executive Council also approved AED 1 billion in economic incentives to support the emirate's economy, which could translate into lower costs for local businesses and, by extension, more stable rents and prices in the Bur Dubai market. Measures to enhance affordable homes and boost workforce productivity were also approved, including the launching of Dubai's Workforce Productivity Measurement System under Resolution No. 67 of 2025. For residents, this means improved services, more efficient infrastructure, and the promise of a vibrant, preserved historic core that remains central to daily life.
