How Decades of Planning Led to Dubai's Current Infrastructure Drive

Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority is advancing 72 major infrastructure projects covering 226 km of roads and 115 bridges and tunnels, with completion targeted by the end of 2027. These works build directly on earlier planning decisions that identified congestion relief needs along key corridors including those serving Bur Dubai.
Origins in Prior Approvals
The current programme traces back to the AED16bn Main Roads Development Plan that outlined 22 road network projects spanning 2024 to 2027. That plan was followed by the June 2024 approval of the AED30bn Tasreef project, which addressed drainage capacity shortfalls that had constrained earlier road expansions. These steps established the technical and funding framework now being executed.
Bur Dubai Specific Links
Within Bur Dubai, the 1,425-metre bridge linking the area to Dubai Islands forms part of the Al Shindagha Corridor Development Project. The AED786 million contract for this bridge was awarded after the corridor's traffic-flow improvements were identified in earlier corridor studies. The bridge's entry and exit points were designed to integrate with existing Bur Dubai road patterns rather than create new alignments.
Evidence from Recent Milestones
Construction of the 30 km Dubai Metro Blue Line with 14 stations began in June 2025 and reached 10 percent completion by November 2025, confirming the timeline set in prior rail master-planning documents. On 1 July 2026 the Dubai Executive Council approved an additional Dhs18 billion package covering transport initiatives that extend the same corridors already under way. The Al Maktoum International Airport expansion, valued at AED120bn, entered large-scale construction by June 2026 with Phase 1 operations scheduled for 2032, following feasibility work completed in preceding years.
