Business Bay Transforms Transport Network to Combat Peak-Hour Congestion
Recent road changes and service restarts in Business Bay reflect responses to ongoing peak-hour pressure at key junctions.
How we reported this
The Roads and Transport Authority completed three traffic improvements in Business Bay that converted a two-lane road into a one-way dual roadway and added a 100m storage lane, raising right-turn capacity by 50 percent. These steps followed years of concentrated congestion at bridges and internal junctions near Executive Towers and Bay Avenue, where limited exit points feed into Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road.
Origins of the pressure
Business Bay Metro Station on the Red Line has long handled high volumes, with trains running every 3 to 5 minutes in peak periods from 7:30 to 9:30 AM and 5:00 to 7:00 PM, and every 6 to 8 minutes off-peak. Weekday service runs from 5 AM to midnight, extending to 1 AM on weekends. The pattern of limited exit routes onto major roads created recurring bottlenecks during those same peak windows.
Steps taken so far
The authority resumed affordable water taxi abra services connecting Marasi, Dubai Water Canal and Dubai Design District at Dh2 per ride. The service operates 8am to 10pm Monday to Saturday and 10am to 10pm on Sunday, offering an alternative for short trips within the area. The earlier road upgrades directly addressed capacity at turn points that had contributed to delays.
Next measures under discussion
Planned additions include a new bridge to Al Wasl Road expected to cut travel time by 30 percent and a new station on the Dubai Metro Blue Line intended to ease load on the existing Red Line. These proposals build on the same pattern of targeted additions that produced the completed roadway changes and restored water-taxi option.
Residents and commuters can monitor RTA updates for any adjustments to service hours or further junction work as the Blue Line station and bridge projects advance.
