Deira Stormwater Drainage and Transport Corridor Projects Advance

Dubai Municipality has completed 36 per cent of the Dhs500 million Deira stormwater drainage project. Full completion remains scheduled for the end of 2027. The works form part of the Dhs30 billion Tasreef Programme.

Drainage network upgrades under the Tasreef Programme

The Deira stormwater project adds 22 km of new drainage networks with pipes up to 2.5 m in diameter. It also includes construction of a new pumping station rated at 8,000 litres per second near Dubai Creek. The Tasreef Programme targets a 700 per cent increase in Dubai's stormwater infrastructure capacity and a 20 per cent reduction in maintenance costs. These changes are expected to affect daily conditions for residents in Deira by addressing surface water during heavy rainfall periods.

The Deira Enrichment Project runs alongside the drainage works. It upgrades infrastructure across 61 hectares and adds four multi-storey car parks that will provide 2,500 additional spaces. The project also includes eight new hotels and 47 buildings. Residents may experience changes in local parking availability and building density as construction proceeds.

Transport corridor progress between Deira and Bur Dubai

A separate 13 km transport corridor is under development to link Deira and Bur Dubai. The corridor is projected to cut travel time from 104 minutes to 16 minutes. Current progress on the corridor stands at 20 per cent. Completion of this link is expected to alter commuting patterns for residents who travel regularly between the two areas.

Local residents in Deira will see the combined effects of these infrastructure programmes on services such as drainage, parking and road travel. The government states the projects will deliver the listed capacity and time improvements once finished. Further updates on delivery timelines will come from Dubai Municipality and the Roads and Transport Authority as work continues through 2027.
