Jumeirah City Council Approves New Public Transport Plan to Enhance Commuter Access

Jumeirah City Council voted on Wednesday to adopt a comprehensive Public Transport Enhancement Plan set to change how residents move around the city. The new policy particularly impacts daily commuters, pensioners, and low-income households by expanding bus routes and lowering fare costs across the city’s public transit system.

The decision follows growing calls from community groups and urban planners who highlight the importance of affordable and reliable transport in Jumeirah. Increased population growth and the rise of dispersed housing regions have placed pressure on current services, which many residents say often run late or do not connect efficiently to key centers of work and education.

Expanded Routes and Lower Fares to Benefit Residents

Effective from January 2027, the policy will add 15 new bus routes including direct lines from northern suburbs like Al Safa to the central business district and major hospitals. The plan introduces reduced fares for children under 12, seniors over 65, and holders of low-income support cards, with monthly passes dropping from 250 AED to 180 AED. These measures are intended to lower travel costs for families and improve access to essential services.

For instance, residents in Al Warqa who previously needed two connections to reach the city center will have direct buses, cutting travel time by an estimated 30 minutes per trip. Local providers also plan to boost frequency during peak hours from every 20 minutes to every 10 minutes on major routes, facilitating better workforce mobility.

Financial Commitment and Next Steps

The City Council allocated 75 million AED in the 2026-27 budget specifically for the transport expansion, covering new vehicles, staffing, and infrastructure upgrades such as additional bus stops and shelters. Policy documents state the city projects a 25 percent increase in public transport usage within the first year as a result of these changes.

Following council approval, the municipality will begin contracting tenders for new bus operators and commence public information campaigns this August. Residents can expect updated schedules and route maps online by November 2026 ahead of service rollout in January.

City officials emphasize ongoing monitoring will track service reliability and passenger satisfaction, with quarterly reports planned to adjust operations accordingly. This approach aims to ensure improvements genuinely address everyday travel challenges faced by Jumeirah’s diverse population.
