Green Tech Startup Cuts Deira's Diesel Dependency With Breakthrough Battery
A local company's breakthrough battery system offers a path away from diesel as the city faces rising power costs.

A Deira-based energy startup called SolvGrid has started commercial deployment of a modular “sand battery” system that promises to cut electricity costs for commercial buildings by up to 40 percent, according to company documents shared with investors this month. The innovation arrives as businesses across the city face volatile grid prices and as utility regulators prepare to tighten emissions standards for new developments.
Why SolvGrid Matters Now
The timing is no accident. Deira’s municipal government has been phasing out subsidies for diesel backup generators-a common sight in older commercial districts-and plans to introduce a carbon levy on standby power by March 2027. SolvGrid’s technology, which stores thermal energy in insulated silica sand, can discharge heat for hours and be paired with existing solar arrays, eliminating the need for diesel spark-gap generators. The company raised US$28 million in Series A funding last month, led by the Abu Dhabi sovereign fund Mubadala, to scale production at a factory in the Al Quoz Industrial Zone.
Local Roots, Global Ambitions
SolvGrid grew out of a research project at Deira University’s College of Engineering in 2022. Its first pilot was a three-story office block on Al Rigga Road, where the sand battery cut the building’s peak-hour draw from the grid by 55 percent over six months. That success convinced the Deira Municipality’s Green Buildings Department to include SolvGrid in its “Decarbonise Deira” pilot programme, which now lists 17 commercial sites that have either installed or pre-ordered the system. The company’s lead product, the SG-100, carries a list price of 385,000 dirhams (US$105,000) and holds enough stored heat to run a 40,000-square-foot building’s HVAC and hot-water systems for eight hours off-grid.
The homegrown engineering is what sets SolvGrid apart from imported battery alternatives. Most competing storage systems rely on lithium-ion cells, which degrade in Deira’s summer heat and require costly climate-controlled enclosures. By contrast, the sand battery uses only silica sand and steel piping-materials available locally-and can operate at ambient temperatures up to 50 °C without performance loss. That durability has already drawn interest from developers in the Industrial City of Abu Dhabi and the Dubai South logistics corridor, both of which are facing tighter grid-supply caps.
What Comes Next
The next tangible step is a performance audit scheduled for August 2026 by the Deira Electricity and Water Authority, which will evaluate the SG-100’s long-term reliability and fire safety. If the audit clears, the authority is expected to update its building code to make sand-battery integration an approved compliance pathway for new construction. For building owners currently negotiating 2027 energy budgets, SolvGrid offers a 5-year lease-to-own plan that the company says yields a net positive cash flow from year two.
