Cycling Routes Safe for Families and Beginners Open in Dubai Marina
New dedicated lanes along the waterfront give parents and novices a protected way to ride without mixing with heavy traffic.
How we reported this
Dubai Marina now offers three kilometres of marked cycling lanes that stay separate from vehicle roads, running from Marina Mall to the western end of The Walk at JBR.
July marks the start of the cooler evening window when families look for outdoor activity before the peak heat returns. Local wellness groups have noted rising interest in low-impact exercise that parents and children can do together without needing a gym membership.
The main route follows the Marina Promenade and links directly to the shaded path beside Dubai Marina Mall. A second loop begins at the eastern entrance of Jumeirah Beach Residence and circles the small park adjacent to the Address Dubai Marina hotel. Both sections carry clear beginner markings and speed limits posted at 15 kilometres per hour.
Dubai Municipality installed the lanes last month after recording 1,200 daily pedestrian-cyclist conflicts along the same stretch in 2025. Bike rentals at the Marina Mall stand cost AED 25 for the first hour and AED 15 for each additional hour, with child seats available at no extra charge.
Key spots for first-time riders
Beginners start at the flat section near Marina Mall because it has no elevation and stays lit until 10 pm. The JBR loop adds a short stretch of artificial turf beside the sand, giving parents a soft place to stop if a child needs a break. Water fountains sit every 400 metres, and two repair kiosks operate from 4 pm to 9 pm on weekdays.
Parents report that the new lanes let them ride with children as young as six without constant braking for pedestrians. The municipality plans to add another two kilometres connecting to Bluewaters Island by November.
Practical steps before heading out
Rentals require a valid Emirates ID or passport copy and close at sunset during Ramadan. Riders should carry at least one litre of water per person and check the Dubai Municipality app for any temporary closures due to maintenance. Families new to the area can join the free Saturday morning orientation rides that leave from the Marina Mall stand at 7 am and last 45 minutes.
