New Cycling Routes Draw Families to Dubai Marina Waterfront

Dubai Marina added 4.2 kilometres of dedicated family cycling lanes along Marina Walk and the adjacent promenade in late June, giving beginners and parents with young children a protected route that avoids main roads.

The lanes opened as temperatures eased slightly after peak summer heat and as more residents sought low-cost outdoor activities. Local wellness groups report higher demand for family exercise options that require little equipment beyond a rented bicycle.

One loop starts at the southern end of Marina Mall and runs north past the Yacht Club before turning onto the wide paved path beside JBR Beach. A second option links the same starting point to the smaller park area near Emirates Crown tower, where traffic lights and wide crossings keep speeds low. Both routes stay within Dubai Marina boundaries and connect directly to shaded rest spots with water fountains.

Marked paths and rental points make entry easy

The Roads and Transport Authority lists the new lanes on its public map as suitable for riders aged eight and older when accompanied by an adult. Bike-rental kiosks at Marina Mall charge AED 60 for two hours, including a helmet and child seat, with a recorded 28 percent rise in family bookings during the first week of July compared with the same period last year.

Volunteers from the Dubai Marina Residents Association run a free 45-minute orientation session every Saturday morning at 7 a.m. near the Yacht Club entrance, teaching basic hand signals and how to share the path with pedestrians. The sessions began in May and continue through August.

Early starts and simple checks keep rides comfortable

Riders are advised to begin before 8 a.m. to avoid later heat and to carry at least one litre of water per person. The flat terrain means most families complete the shorter 4.2 km loop in under 40 minutes, including stops. Parents can extend the ride by crossing into the connected Jumeirah Beach Residence paths once children gain confidence, but the core Marina routes remain fully separated from vehicle traffic.

Regular checks of tyre pressure and brake function at the rental kiosk reduce the chance of roadside stops. The municipality plans to add lighting along the same paths by October so evening family rides can continue once temperatures drop further.
