JBR Locals Reveal Secret Nature Walks Tourists Never Find
Jbr residents favor secluded trails that deliver steady fitness gains without the crowds that pack the main waterfront paths.
How we reported this

More than 800 Jbr locals signed up for the city’s summer trail maintenance crew shifts by the end of June, focusing on routes that stay off the main tourist maps.
The surge tracks with the Jbr Wellness Department’s push to expand outdoor activity options after a 2025 survey showed 62 percent of residents wanted quieter spots for daily movement. City data released last month lists trail use rising 28 percent year over year on lesser-marked paths, while popular shoreline routes saw only a 9 percent bump.
Two routes stand out in local routines. The Shadow Creek Trail begins behind the Old Mill District community center on Canal Street and runs 2.4 miles through mixed woodland before rejoining paved streets near the Jbr Public Library. The Fern Gully Path starts at the rear entrance of Meadowbrook Park off Ridge Road and follows a narrow creek bed for 1.8 miles, ending at a small clearing equipped with pull-up bars installed by the Jbr Parks and Recreation Department in April 2025.
Why these routes draw steady local traffic
Both trails avoid the wide, signposted entrances that bus tours use. Shadow Creek stays shaded for most of its length, which matters during the current heat wave that has pushed daytime highs above 31 degrees. Fern Gully offers natural resistance sections where runners climb short, root-covered grades that replace gym stair work. The Jbr Trail Runners group meets at the Canal Street trailhead every Tuesday at 6:15 a.m. and records average group sizes of 14 participants, none of whom appear on the city’s public event calendars.
Maintenance funding for these two paths totaled $187,000 in the 2025-2026 fiscal year, according to budget documents approved by the Jbr City Council in March. That figure covers gravel replenishment and removal of fallen limbs but excludes the larger interpretive signs placed at tourist entrances. A single guided session on either trail through the department’s Outdoor Fitness Initiative costs $12 for non-members.
Residents who want to start on Shadow Creek should park at the library lot on Canal Street after 5 p.m. on weekdays when spots open up. Those trying Fern Gully can enter Meadowbrook Park from Ridge Road and follow the chain-link fence line until the gravel turns to dirt. Both routes stay open until 9 p.m. under current park rules, and the department asks users to carry out any trash to keep the paths clear for the next group.
